Johansson was born in New York City. His father, Karsten Johansson, was a Danish-born architect, and his paternal grandfather, Ejner Johansson, screenwriter and director (Scarlett Johansson held Danish citizenship). Her mother, Melanie Sloan, producer, came from the Ashkenazi Jewish family from the Bronx. Johansson's parents met in Denmark, where his mother lived with Johansson's maternal grandmother, Dorothy, a former bookkeeper and teacher. Johansson has an older sister, Vanessa, who is also an actress; a brother older, Adrian; a twin brother, Hunter, also an actor, and half-brother, Christian, from re-marriage of his father.
